How microneedling rebuilds collagen from the inside out
Microneedling is a form of collagen induction therapy. A device fitted with very fine needles makes hundreds of tiny, controlled channels in the skin. Those micro-injuries are small enough to heal quickly but real enough to switch on the skin's repair response, which draws in the cells called fibroblasts and lays down fresh collagen and elastin over the weeks and months that follow. The needles do the prompting. Your own skin does the rebuilding.
That new collagen is what smooths the surface over time. Microneedling is used for fine lines, acne scars, rough or uneven texture, enlarged pores, and stretch marks, and it works on the face and elsewhere on the body. It is not an overnight fix and it is rarely one visit. The change builds gradually, and it usually takes a short series to show.
We offer three ways to do it, and they are not the same treatment at three prices. One is microneedling on its own. One adds your own platelet-rich plasma. The 60 to 90 minutes inside a microneedling session
Your provider applies topical numbing cream and lets it work for 30 to 45 minutes. The active needling takes 20 to 30 minutes after that. Sensation during treatment feels like vibrating sandpaper passing over your skin. Uncomfortable in places, well-tolerated thanks to the numbing.
Skin will look sunburned for the first 24 to 48 hours, with mild swelling and warmth. Some pinpoint bleeding during the session is normal and stops quickly. Days 2 to 4 may bring mild flaking as your skin turns over. By day 5 you'll look normal again, but the collagen rebuild keeps going underneath for the next 3 to 6 weeks.
No makeup for 48 hours. No retinol, AHA, BHA, or strong actives for 5 days. Daily SPF for 2 weeks. Your new skin is more sun-sensitive during this window.

What to look forward to during your microneedling visit
Here is what a visit looks like. After a consultation to look at your skin and agree on a plan, we cleanse the area and usually apply a numbing cream so the treatment stays comfortable. The device passes over the skin, creating those micro-channels at a depth chosen for your concern, shallower for fine lines and tone, deeper for scars. A single face session takes roughly thirty to sixty minutes. Afterward the skin looks flushed, a little like a mild sunburn, and that settles over the next few days.
Most people do a series rather than a one-off. Sessions are usually spaced about four to six weeks apart, and three to six of them is a common range, with deeper scarring generally needing more. You may notice a fresher look within a week or two as the skin calms, but the collagen change is slower than that. Best results typically land around three to six months out, and many people return about once a year to maintain them.
The foundation is SkinPen microneedling, and it is $450. We use the SkinPen device, which in 2018 became the first microneedling device cleared by the FDA. On its own it is the right starting point for fine lines, texture, pores, and mild acne scars. If you are new to microneedling, this is usually where we begin.
The second option adds platelet-rich plasma on top of that SkinPen base. We draw a small amount of your blood, spin it down to concentrate the platelets and the growth factors they carry, then apply that plasma to the freshly needled skin, the same PRP we use for a PRP facial. The thinking is that your own growth factors may support healing and improve the result. The research here is honestly mixed: some studies show an edge for acne scars, others are inconclusive, so we treat it as a may and not a promise. PRP is a $250 add-on on top of the $450 SkinPen treatment.
The third option adds heat. RF microneedling with Fractora, a bipolar radiofrequency device made by InMode, delivers radiofrequency energy through the needle tips into the deeper layer of the skin. That heat tightens existing collagen and drives a stronger rebuilding response than needles alone, which makes it the option to weigh when skin laxity and deeper lines are the main concern rather than surface texture. Fractora runs $300 to $650 depending on the area treated.
So, the short version: SkinPen is the base treatment, PRP layers your own growth factors onto it, and Fractora adds heat for tightening. A consultation is the honest way to sort out which one fits, because the right choice turns on what you are treating and how much downtime you want, not on the price alone.
How a microneedling series builds results over 3 to 6 months
Plan your microneedling series
A consultation comes first. We look at your skin, talk through what is bothering you, and match you to the right one of the three, along with a sensible number of sessions. Microneedling suits most healthy adults who want smoother texture or softer scars. We cannot promise a specific result, and no honest provider will, but we will tell you plainly what is realistic for your skin.
Downtime is short. Expect redness and mild swelling for anywhere from a day up to about five, sometimes with a little pinpoint bleeding right after or some dry, flaking skin as it heals. Most people are back to normal quickly and can wear makeup the next day. Less common risks include bruising, infection, or a change in pigment, which is part of why microneedling belongs in trained hands and clean conditions.
Some people should wait or skip it, so be open with us. Tell your provider if you have an active breakout or a skin infection in the area, a tendency to form keloid or raised scars, or if you are pregnant, and mention any recent isotretinoin (Accutane) use or any condition or medication that affects how you heal or bleed. These do not always rule the treatment out, but they change the plan, and that is a conversation to have before we start.

How many microneedling sessions will I need?

RF is better for skin tightening, jowl/neck laxity, deep stretch marks, and significant scarring. Standard microneedling is excellent for texture, pores, and mild concerns.
How is microneedling different from RF microneedling?
We apply topical numbing for 30–45 minutes before treatment. With proper numbing, most patients describe it as mild discomfort—rough or scratchy sensation. Sensitive areas (around the nose, lips) feel more. We adjust needle depth based on the area being treated. Without numbing, microneedling would be significantly uncomfortable; with it, it's well-tolerated.
Does microneedling hurt?
Recovery is about 5 days. Day 1: looks like a sunburn. Day 2–3: redness fading, skin feels slightly rough. Day 4–5: minor flaking, fresh skin underneath. Use heavy moisturizer, gentle cleanser, and strict SPF for the first week. Skip retinoids and active acids for 5–7 days post-treatment.
What's the recovery from microneedling?
Yes—it's one of the most effective non-laser treatments for acne scars. Microneedling triggers collagen remodeling in the scarred tissue, gradually filling and softening the depressions. Most patients see meaningful improvement after a series of 3 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Combining with PRP further accelerates results. Can microneedling help with acne scars?

Will microneedling shrink my pores?
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is your own blood, spun to concentrate platelets and growth factors. When applied to skin during microneedling, those growth factors are driven deep into the micro-channels. Result: faster healing, better collagen response, more dramatic results per session. We recommend adding PRP for patients treating acne scars, significant texture issues, or wanting accelerated results.
