The PiQo4 laser facial goes after the marks a West Texas sun leaves on your face: brown sun spots, freckling, and the mottled, uneven tone that builds up over years outdoors. It fades that pigment and evens your skin tone, and at the same time it softens rough texture and the look of large pores. We use the PiQo4, a laser made by Lumenis. It is the same device behind our PiQo4 tattoo removal, tuned to a gentler setting for facial skin instead of ink.

The technology is what makes that range possible. The PiQo4 is a picosecond and nanosecond laser with four wavelengths, 1064, 532, 650, and 585 nanometers. Each pulse fires in a trillionth of a second, faster than heat can spread, so the energy hits pigment as a sharp mechanical jolt rather than a burn. Dermatologists call this a photoacoustic effect. The pulse shatters the pigment into particles far smaller than the original clump, and your body clears those fragments on its own over the weeks that follow.

At the settings we use for a facial, the same laser does a second job. Focused into the skin, those ultra-short pulses set off a small, controlled repair response in the deeper layer while leaving the surface intact. Mild redness and warmth for a few hours, fading by the next morning in most patients. Treated spots may darken briefly before clearing. Some patients see a "frosted" appearance immediately post-treatment that resolves in 30 to 60 minutes.

Sun protection is essential (SPF 30 minimum, daily). Skip retinoids and active acids for 3 to 5 days. Most patients book a series of 3 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart for cumulative results.

People ask about pain first. A facial pass is mild. Most describe it as a light snapping against the skin with a warm flush, closer to a rubber band flick than anything sharp, and a full face takes only a few minutes. There is no cutting and no needle, and you can drive yourself home afterward.

During the treatment you may see a faint whitening settle over the darker spots for a few seconds. That is called frosting, and it simply means the energy reached the pigment. It fades quickly.

The PiQo4 facial is a series, not a single visit. We usually plan a course of three to five sessions, spaced a few weeks apart, because pigment clears in layers and your skin needs time to recover and renew between passes. Results build gradually across the series rather than appearing overnight, and we cannot promise a specific outcome. Skin varies, and honest expectations are part of a good consultation.

A word on melasma, a deeper, often hormone-driven kind of pigmentation. It is not the same as sun spots, and it can flare or darken if treated too aggressively. We handle it with a gentler, lower-energy plan, so if that is your main concern, start with melasma and pigmentation instead.

The facial is aimed at pigment, tone, and general texture. If your real goal is acne scarring or deeper texture, a laser is not always the best single tool, and we may suggest pairing it with or starting from microneedling, which works through a different mechanism. Your provider will map that out at your consultation.

Before your first PiQo4 session

Here is the part people don't expect. In the days after a session, the spots you treated usually get darker before they get better. They can turn to tiny flecks that look like coffee grounds, form fine micro-crusts, and then flake off on their own over about four to seven days. Let them. Picking or scrubbing at them is what invites a scar or a lasting mark. Otherwise downtime is mild: some redness and light swelling, like a mild sunburn, usually gone within a day or two.

Sun protection is not optional here. It is part of the treatment. Freshly treated skin is vulnerable, and a tan or burn on it raises the odds of a dark or light patch that lingers. Keep the area out of direct sun and wear a broad-spectrum SPF every day, year-round in Lubbock. Between sessions, some clients keep their results up with regular facials.

A few things are worth knowing up front. The PiQo4 is gentler than older lasers and than a broadband treatment like our IPL photo facial, and its photoacoustic action carries a lower risk of pigment trouble, but it is not risk-free. A few situations mean waiting. We do not treat during pregnancy. Come in without a fresh tan or sunburn, and skip the tanning bed and self-tanner beforehand. Tell us if you take any medication that makes your skin sensitive to light, such as certain antibiotics or recent isotretinoin, and let us know if you scar easily.
