What are chemical peels?
A chemical peel is a cosmetic skin treatment. We apply an acid solution to the skin, it loosens the bonds that hold dead cells on the surface, and those top layers lift and shed over the days that follow. What grows back is fresher: smoother texture, more even tone, a brighter surface. The acid also prompts the skin to speed up its own cell turnover, so the benefit is not only what comes off but what the skin does afterward.
Peels come in depths, and depth is the thing that matters most. A light, or superficial, peel works on the outermost layer only. It is gentle, needs little or no real downtime, and is meant to be repeated, often about once a month. A medium peel reaches deeper, does more in a single visit, and asks for real recovery time with visible peeling. Stronger results, more space between treatments. Where your skin sits on that spectrum is the first thing a peel decides.

The first week after your chemical peel
The peel itself takes 30 to 45 minutes. Your aesthetician cleanses your skin, applies the peel in layers (you'll feel warmth, tingling, or mild stinging that fades in a few minutes), neutralizes it, and finishes with post-care products. You go home with specific at-home instructions.
What happens next depends on which peel you picked. Glycolic and Acne peels have minimal to mild flaking. Most clients look normal within 24 to 48 hours. Green Peel and ZO 3-Step have visible peeling starting around day 3 and resolving by day 7. Plan around events accordingly.
The rules for the first two weeks: strict sun avoidance (sun on freshly peeled skin causes dark spots), daily SPF, no retinoids or active acids for at least a week, no exfoliants until skin is fully calm, and no picking or peeling manually. Let your skin shed naturally.

A visit starts with a look at your skin and a plan. We cleanse, apply the peel solution, leave it on for a set time, then neutralize or remove it. The active treatment is usually under half an hour. What separates the three we offer is strength and recovery.
The lightest is the AHA peel, $90. It uses glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid, at a strength that brightens and smooths without much fuss. There is little real downtime, and it is built to be repeated, roughly monthly, as steady maintenance for tone and texture. If you are new to peels, this is usually where we start.
The Herbal Green Peel is $275. It is a botanical treatment rather than a straight acid, which makes it a gentler choice for sensitive skin, and it is one we reach for with melasma and uneven pigment. More on melasma in a moment, because it deserves an honest word.

In exchange, it works harder on tone, texture, and fine lines than a light peel does, and these are spaced further apart.
A word on melasma, since it is easy to oversell. A peel can lighten the pigment that is already there, but melasma is a chronic condition that tends to return, and the pigment-making cells driving it are not switched off by a peel. Heat and aggressive treatment can make melasma worse rather than better. So we go gentle, we lean hard on daily sun protection, and for most people a peel is one part of a longer plan, not a one-time fix. Peels also have a ceiling. For deep acne scars, deep wrinkles, or texture that sits well below the surface, a peel is usually not the right tool. That work is better suited to microneedling or a laser, which reach deeper than a surface peel can. A consultation is the honest way to tell which side of that line your skin is on.
Pause retinol and avoid sun before and after
Before your first chemical peel
Aftercare is short, and one part is not optional. Sun protection matters most: freshly peeled skin burns and marks easily, and sun exposure afterward is the quickest way to undo the result or set off new pigment. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day and stay out of direct sun while you heal. And let the skin peel on its own. Do not pick, pull, or scrub the flaking skin, however tempting, because that is what turns a peel into a scar or a dark mark.
Some people should wait or choose a gentler option, so be open with us. Tell your provider if you are pregnant, since some peel acids are not used during pregnancy. Recent isotretinoin, the acne medication also sold as Accutane, means waiting, generally around six months after you stop. An active cold sore, another skin infection, or broken skin in the area means we reschedule. And if you have a deeper skin tone, you carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a darkening that can follow treatment, so we favor lighter peels and a patch test over anything aggressive. None of these are automatic no's. They change the plan, and that is a conversation to have first.
