POST CARE GUIDE
Microneedling Aftercare
Microneedling with the FDA-cleared SkinPen creates thousands of tiny, controlled channels in the skin, prompting your body to build new collagen and elastin as it heals. The first 24 hours are the sensitive window, when those channels are still sealing and your barrier needs simple, careful support. This guide walks you through the full seven-day recovery: the sunburn-like redness of day one, the light peeling and rough texture mid-week, and reintroducing your actives around day five to seven. You will find what to apply, what to skip, how to protect new skin from the sun, and the signs that warrant a call. If you added PRP to your treatment, the same aftercare applies. For questions between visits, call us at (806) 701-5840.
Your Microneedling recovery at a glance
What happens, and when
Here is the path from treatment day to final result.
First 24 Hours
Hyaluronic only
For the first 24 hours the microchannels are still sealing, so keep everything minimal. Rinse with lukewarm water and clean fingertips, apply a hyaluronic acid serum, and seal with a fragrance-free moisturizer. Nothing else goes on the skin: no makeup, no active ingredients, and no sunscreen yet. Let the barrier rest.
Days 2 to 3
Sunburn feel
Days two and three usually feel like a mild sunburn: pink, tight, and warm, easing a little each day. Add your morning SPF 30 or higher now. Keep skipping makeup, heavy exercise and sweating, saunas, hot tubs, swimming pools, and hot showers, and stay out of direct sun until the skin no longer feels sensitive. Gentle cleanse, hydrate, protect.
Days 4 to 7
Light peeling, no picking
By days four to seven you may see light flaking or a sandpaper feel as fresh skin surfaces. Do not pick, peel, or scrub it off; let it shed on its own. You can usually reintroduce gentle actives around day five to seven if the skin is calm. Keep up your daily SPF. Real results build across a series of three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart.
How to care for your skin barrier as it rebuilds
How to Care for Your Skin After Microneedling
First 6 hours (do nothing)
For the first six hours after your SkinPen session, put nothing on your skin. No makeup, no sunscreen, no serums, no moisturizer, and no cleanser. The microchannels created during treatment are still open in this window, and anything you apply can be carried down into them, including bacteria and ingredients your skin does not want in its deeper layers. Let your face breathe. Keep your hands away from it, avoid wiping or touching the skin, and stay out of direct sun. After six hours have passed, begin the gentle hydrate-and-protect routine your provider outlined.
Daily SPF 30+ (from day 2)
Starting on day two, apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning. It is the single most important step for protecting your results. Freshly treated skin is far more vulnerable to UV light, and unprotected sun exposure during recovery is a leading cause of hyperpigmentation in the treated area. Reapply every two hours when you are outdoors; a powder or compact sunscreen like the SkinBetter Science SPF 68 we carry makes that easy without disturbing the skin. For the first couple of weeks, also seek shade and wear a wide-brimmed hat while collagen rebuilds.
Reintroduce actives (day 5 to 7)
Give your barrier a full five to seven days before bringing active ingredients back, and reintroduce them one at a time so you can see how your skin responds. Start with the gentlest, such as a low-strength vitamin C or a mild retinol, and only once the skin looks calm and no longer feels sensitive. Hold stronger actives, including prescription retinoids and high-strength glycolic or salicylic acids, for the full two weeks. If anything stings, burns, or brings the redness back, stop and give it a few more days. If you are unsure about your own products, bring them to your next visit and we will sequence them with you.
Clean hands and pillowcase
While the microchannels heal, your skin is more open to bacteria than usual, so cleanliness matters more than it normally would. Wash your hands thoroughly before you touch your face or apply anything to it. Sleep on a fresh, clean pillowcase for at least the first three nights; an unwashed case holds oil and bacteria that can settle into treated skin overnight. Keep phones, hair, and hands off your face during the day. Once you are cleared to exercise, wipe down equipment first and cleanse gently afterward. Small habits like these lower the chance of a post-treatment breakout.
Resume cleanser AM and PM (day 2)
On day two you can return to washing your face morning and night with a gentle, non-foaming, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water. Apply it with your fingertips, rinse, and pat dry with a clean towel; no washcloths, brushes, or hot water yet. Keep the rest of your routine minimal: hyaluronic acid serum and a bland moisturizer, morning and evening. Continue to leave out vitamin C, retinol, AHAs, BHAs, and any scrub or exfoliator for at least the first five days. If your skin feels tight during the day, a little extra moisturizer anytime is fine.
Hyaluronic acid (first 24 hours)
Once the first six hours are behind you, keep the routine simple and soothing. Rinse with lukewarm water using clean fingertips only, then pat, do not rub, with a soft clean towel. Apply a hyaluronic acid serum to damp skin to draw in moisture, and follow with a bland, fragrance-free moisturizer to support the barrier while it rebuilds. Skip washcloths, cleansing brushes, and any active or foaming cleanser for now. Through the rest of the first 24 hours, hyaluronic acid and a basic moisturizer are all your skin needs. Reapply moisturizer whenever the skin feels tight.
Redness, tightness, and the 24-to-72 hour timeline
What's Normal: Microneedling Downtime
Normal, temporary, and part of the process.
Sandpaper texture (first week)
For the first five to seven days your skin can feel sandpaper-rough or grainy to the touch. That texture is the treated surface drying and resurfacing while brand-new skin forms underneath, and it settles on its own. Keep it comfortable with a bland, fragrance-free moisturizer and a hyaluronic acid serum morning and night. Do not exfoliate, scrub, or reach for an acid to speed it along. Physical or chemical exfoliation on healing skin drags off cells before they are ready and can trigger irritation or dark spots. Let it smooth out.
Bronzed appearance (days 2 to 4)
A few clients notice a light bronze or tan-like tint for two to four days after treatment. It comes from the top layer of skin drying and darkening slightly before it flakes away, not from sun exposure, and it fades as the fresh layer surfaces underneath. You do not need to treat it beyond your gentle cleanse, hydrate, and SPF routine, and you should not try to buff or scrub it off. If the discoloration deepens, spreads, or lingers past a week, call us so we can take a look.
Swelling (mild, 24 hours)
Mild puffiness is common in the first 24 hours, most often under the eyes and along the jawline where the skin is thinner. It is part of the normal healing response and usually eases by the next morning. A cool (not icy) compress held gently against the skin helps bring it down, and sleeping with your head propped on an extra pillow keeps fluid from pooling overnight. If you need something for discomfort, call us and we will advise what is best for healing skin. Swelling that worsens after the first day, rather than settling, should be reported to us.
Peeling (days 3 to 5)
Around days three to five you may see light flaking or fine peeling, especially near the nose, mouth, and forehead. This is the treated surface shedding as new skin takes its place, and it is a sign the process is working. Let it lift and fall away on its own. Do not pick, peel, or scrub at loose flakes, and skip exfoliating tools entirely. Pulling skin before it is ready can open the door to scarring or dark patches, particularly in deeper skin tones. Keep flaking soft with your hyaluronic acid serum and a bland moisturizer, and it resolves within a few days.
Redness (first 24 to 48 hours)
Expect your skin to look pink to red for the first 24 to 48 hours, much like a mild sunburn. The face often feels tight, warm, and a little sensitive, and on the day of treatment you may see tiny pinpoints where the needles worked or a faint sheen of lymph fluid. This is the normal response to controlled micro-injury, and it settles on its own. Most people find it looks more dramatic than it feels. Cool compresses, gentle hydration, and leaving the skin alone are all it needs. Redness that deepens or spreads after day two, instead of fading, is worth a call to us.
Products and activities to avoid for 72 hours
What to Avoid After Microneedling

Picking & Scrubbing
Do not pick at peeling skin or use any physical exfoliator (scrub, washcloth, face brush, dermaplane) for at least 10 days. Picking causes hyperpigmentation and can scar.

Swimming
No pools, hot tubs, or open water (lakes, ocean) for 48 to 72 hours. Pool chemistry and waterborne bacteria can both cause infection through the open channels.

Active Skincare
No retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C, or exfoliators until the skin is fully healed (typically 7 to 10 days). These ingredients on raw skin cause irritation and prolong recovery.

Sweating & Heat
No sweating, strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, or hot tubs for 24 hours. Sweat introduces bacteria into the open microchannels and risks infection.

Makeup
No makeup for at least 24 hours. Brushes and applicators carry bacteria, and pigment can become trapped in open channels and cause uneven healing.

Sun Exposure
Avoid direct sun for at least 7 days. SPF 30+ minimum from day 2 forward. Sun during the healing phase causes hyperpigmentation in treated areas.

Mild redness, tightness, light swelling, and flaking are all expected and improve day by day. Reach out to us right away if you notice any of the following:
- Signs of infection — redness that increases or spreads after day 2, warmth, tenderness, pus or yellow crusting, swelling that worsens after the first 24 hours, red streaks, or fever.
- Blistering or open skin breakdown beyond the pinpoint marks discussed at your appointment, or skin that weeps and does not begin to close.
- Pain that intensifies after the first 24 hours rather than steadily easing, or discomfort that over-the-counter relief does not touch.
- Allergic reaction signs — hives, a spreading rash, intense itching, or swelling that extends beyond the treated area, especially around the eyes, lips, or throat.
- Bleeding that lasts beyond 24 hours, or discoloration that keeps deepening instead of fading over the first week.

FAQ
Your questions, answered
We’ve answered some of the most common questions below to help make your experience simple, transparent, and stress-free.
Microneedling uses tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, triggering your body's natural collagen and elastin production. Over a series of treatments, this improves texture, softens fine lines, fades acne scars and stretch marks, reduces pore size, and produces firmer, healthier-looking skin. It's one of the most versatile collagen-induction treatments available.
What is microneedling and what does it treat?
SkinPen is the only FDA-cleared microneedling device for facial acne scars and neck wrinkles. The needle cartridges are sterile single-use, eliminating cross-contamination risk. The vertical needle motion produces cleaner micro-channels than older roller-based devices. Results are more consistent and recovery is faster.
What's the difference between SkinPen and other microneedling devices?
Most patients see meaningful improvement after a series of 3 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Acne scars or significant concerns may benefit from additional sessions. Maintenance sessions on a regular cycle keep results long-term. Adding PRP accelerates results and may reduce total sessions needed.
How many microneedling sessions will I need?
Standard microneedling creates micro-injuries at the surface to trigger collagen. RF (radiofrequency) microneedling adds heat energy through those same needles, treating deeper layers simultaneously. RF is better for skin tightening, jowl/neck laxity, deep stretch marks, and significant scarring. Standard microneedling is excellent for texture, pores, and mild concerns.
How is microneedling different from RF microneedling?
We apply topical numbing for 30–45 minutes before treatment. With proper numbing, most patients describe it as mild discomfort—rough or scratchy sensation. Sensitive areas (around the nose, lips) feel more. We adjust needle depth based on the area being treated. Without numbing, microneedling would be significantly uncomfortable; with it, it's well-tolerated.
Does microneedling hurt?
Recovery is about 5 days. Day 1: looks like a sunburn. Day 2–3: redness fading, skin feels slightly rough. Day 4–5: minor flaking, fresh skin underneath. Use heavy moisturizer, gentle cleanser, and strict SPF for the first week. Skip retinoids and active acids for 5–7 days post-treatment.
What's the recovery from microneedling?
Yes—it's one of the most effective non-laser treatments for acne scars. Microneedling triggers collagen remodeling in the scarred tissue, gradually filling and softening the depressions. Most patients see meaningful improvement after a series of 3 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Combining with PRP further accelerates results. Best for atrophic (depressed) scars; raised scars need different approaches.
Can microneedling help with acne scars?
Yes—particularly for white/silver stretch marks (mature ones). Microneedling triggers collagen building in the stretched skin, improving texture and tightness. Most patients need 6+ sessions for visible improvement. RF microneedling is more effective for deeper stretch marks. We can address stretch marks on abdomen, hips, thighs, breasts, and arms.
Can microneedling help with stretch marks?
Yes—visibly enlarged pores typically tighten 20–40% across a series of treatments. Collagen rebuilding around the pore opening reduces visible diameter. Combining with topical retinoids extends results. Pore size is partially genetic; we can improve significantly but not eliminate.
Will microneedling shrink my pores?
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is your own blood, spun to concentrate platelets and growth factors. When applied to skin during microneedling, those growth factors are driven deep into the micro-channels. Result: faster healing, better collagen response, more dramatic results per session. We recommend adding PRP for patients treating acne scars, significant texture issues, or wanting accelerated results.
What's PRP microneedling and why add it?
SkinPen Microneedling is $450 per session. PRP-enhanced microneedling is $250 (PRP for Face / Microneedling). RF Microneedling: $375–$650 per session depending on area. Membership reduces per-session pricing.
How much does microneedling cost in Lubbock?
Most healthy adults with concerns about texture, pores, fine lines, mild scarring, or stretch marks are candidates. Not appropriate during active acne breakouts in the treatment area, with active herpes outbreaks, on Accutane (within 6 months), pregnant, or with certain bleeding disorders. We screen at consultation.
Who's a candidate for microneedling?
Yes—commonly paired with chemical peels (alternating in a series), PRP (same session), RF for added tightening, and various topical regimens. We design multi-modal plans for patients with complex concerns. Spacing matters—we'll sequence treatments so skin can recover between.
Can I combine microneedling with other treatments?
Initial glow within days. Texture improvement visible by week 4–6 after each session. Full collagen-driven results from a complete series appear at 3 months as collagen continues building. Don't judge a single session—the cumulative result across a series is what matters.
