A minimally invasive, in-office treatment. SkinPen needling creates controlled micro-channels that prompt collagen and elastin, and platelet-rich plasma concentrated from your own blood is worked into those channels. What is microneedling with PRP?
Microneedling with PRP begins with the needling. A SkinPen device runs fine needles across the skin and opens hundreds of tiny channels, and that controlled injury is what tells your skin to build collagen. PRP is the layer added on top. We draw a small amount of your own blood, spin it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, then work that concentrate into the fresh channels. You may have heard the pairing called a vampire facial.
Pricing at The Spa by Sheena is built in two parts. SkinPen microneedling on its own is $450. Adding PRP is a $250 add-on, so the "$250" on this page's price card is the PRP portion that sits on top of the $450 microneedling base, not the cost of the whole session. Our nurse practitioner Becca (MSN, FNP-C) and our RN Angie perform the treatment under our medical director, Dr. Arledge, a plastic surgeon. One honest note before you book. Microneedling itself has solid support for texture and acne scarring. Whether adding PRP does better than microneedling alone is less settled — the research points that way but is still mixed. What to expect from microneedling with PRP
Your first visit is a consultation. Becca or Angie goes through your health history, your medications, and what you want to change about your skin before recommending anything. Microneedling with PRP is not right for everyone. It is generally held off over an active skin infection or an active acne breakout in the treatment area, and it is avoided if you have a bleeding disorder or a low platelet count, or if you take a blood thinner. If you scar easily or form keloids, say so, because needling can trigger that. It is also set aside during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and if you have taken isotretinoin recently, tell your provider. Bring your full medication list.
Most people find it very tolerable; a numbing cream goes on first, and the sensation is more prickle and warmth than sharp pain. Downtime is short. Right after, your skin looks flushed and feels warm, close to a mild sunburn, and that redness usually settles within about one to three days. Sun protection matters while the skin recovers.
Give results time. Any change comes on gradually. Skin often looks fresher within a few weeks, but the real work is collagen, and collagen rebuilds over months. There is no single standard schedule. Many providers suggest a short series, often around three sessions spaced a few weeks apart, then occasional upkeep. What is right for you gets decided at consultation, around your skin and your goals, not a fixed rule.

Start with what the needling does. The SkinPen is the first microneedling device the FDA cleared, back in 2018. Its needles create thousands of microscopic punctures in the skin. Your body reads them as small wounds and starts a repair cascade, and that cascade is what drives new collagen and elastin. This is why microneedling is also called collagen induction therapy, and the channels it opens are the doorway PRP uses.
PRP is the second half. Platelets carry growth factors, the signaling proteins your body relies on to heal, and the plan is to concentrate them and place them right where the needles have primed the skin. Because the plasma comes from your own blood, there is nothing foreign in it, so allergy or rejection is not a concern. A session runs like this: a provider takes a small blood draw, the sample goes into a centrifuge that separates the platelet-rich layer, and your provider then needles the skin and works the concentrate in. Plan on under an hour in the chair.
On the evidence, be clear-eyed. Microneedling on its own is well studied for smoothing texture and softening acne scars. Studies of microneedling combined with PRP report better scar improvement and higher patient satisfaction in several trials, and one meta-analysis found the odds of meaningful improvement rose with PRP added. But those studies are mostly small, apply the plasma in different ways, and their authors call for larger, higher-quality trials. PRP may enhance the result. It is not a guarantee, and no honest provider will frame it as one.
