Our Kybella Services

The only FDA-approved injectable for fat beneath the chin

What is Kybella?

If you have a double chin that has not responded to weight loss, exercise, or contouring makeup, Kybella is the treatment for it. Kybella is the only FDA-approved injectable specifically for submental fullness (the medical term for the fat pad under the chin). Its active ingredient is deoxycholic acid, a molecule your body already produces to break down dietary fat. When injected into the submental fat pad, it destroys the fat cells in that specific area. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store fat again, which is why Kybella results are considered permanent.

How much does Kybella cost at The Spa by Sheena? A single Kybella syringe runs $650. Most patients need 2 to 4 syringes total across a series of 2 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, depending on the size of the fat pad and how much reduction you are after. Your consultation includes an assessment to estimate your total series cost before you commit.

A Kybella session runs 15 to 20 minutes. Your injector marks the treatment area with a small grid pattern and places precise injections across the grid. Most patients describe the sensation as a burning that fades within a minute or two after each injection. No downtime from the procedure itself.

The predictable part of Kybella is the swelling. Expect noticeable swelling under the chin for 2 to 5 days after each session. Plan for about a week of "social downtime" if you have events on the calendar. The swelling is actually part of the mechanism working. It looks temporarily like a bigger double chin, but it is your body responding to the destroyed fat cells. Bruising, numbness, tenderness, and a lumpy feeling for 1 to 3 weeks are all normal. Full visible reduction shows up 4 to 6 weeks after each session, with progressive improvement across the full series.

Kybella results are permanent because the fat cells are gone. You cannot regain fat in that area unless you gain significant overall body weight. For clients whose double chin is more skin laxity than fat, we may recommend RF microneedling or the plasma pen instead. Your consultation confirms which treatment fits your anatomy.

What to expect from Kybella treatment

Significant swelling under the chin is the most predictable result. Expect to look noticeably swollen for 2 to 5 days post-treatment. Most patients plan a "social downtime" of about a week. The swelling is part of the mechanism (it indicates the deoxycholic acid is working) but it does look like a bigger double chin temporarily.

Bruising, numbness, tenderness, and a hard or lumpy feeling are all normal in the treated area for 1 to 3 weeks. Numbness can last up to 6 to 8 weeks in some patients before fully resolving.

Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours. Use cold compresses for swelling. Visible reduction shows up around the 4 to 6 week mark after each session, with progressive improvement across the full series.

Kybella is an injectable that reduces the pocket of fat under the chin, the area most people call a double chin. The active ingredient is deoxycholic acid, a molecule your body already makes to help break down dietary fat. It is the only injectable the FDA has approved to treat submental fat in adults.

Here is how it works. Deoxycholic acid is cytolytic, which means it breaks down the wall of a fat cell. Once those cells are destroyed, your body clears them out over the following weeks. Treated fat cells do not regenerate. Your long-term look still depends on your weight, since fat cells left behind in the area can grow if you gain.

At The Spa, Kybella is $650 per syringe. How many syringes you need depends on how much fullness is under the chin, so the total is set at your consultation, not before. Each session is a series of small injections across the area under the chin during a short in-office visit.

Most people need more than one session. The FDA label allows up to 6 treatments, spaced at least one month apart. Many patients reach the look they want in fewer. Final results show several months after the last visit, once swelling settles and the body finishes clearing the treated fat.

Your injector is Becca (MSN, FNP-C) or Angie (RN), working under medical director Dr. Arledge, a plastic surgeon. The Spa has been open in Lubbock since 2016. Kybella is one of several injectable treatments we offer, and your provider will tell you honestly whether it fits your goals or whether another option is a better match.

Significant swelling for 5 to 7 days post-treatment

Before your first Kybella treatment

Kybella treats fat, not loose skin and not overall weight. If your main concern is skin laxity along the jaw or neck, reducing fat alone will not tighten it, and a skin-focused option like plasma pen may suit you better. If the goal is broader weight change, that is a different path, and our GLP-1 weight management program is built for it. Kybella does not add volume either, so it is not a stand-in for dermal fillers, which restore fullness rather than remove it.

Good candidates have moderate to severe fullness under the chin and reasonably firm, elastic skin that can settle over the new contour. A consultation is the only way to know if you qualify. Your provider reviews your health history and examines the area first.

Plan for swelling. In the clinical trials, swelling was the most common reaction, reported in 87% of patients, and it can last from a few days to a few weeks. Bruising, pain, numbness, and redness in the treated area are also common. Many people book the visit for a time when a swollen chin for a stretch afterward will not be a problem.

Less common effects showed up in the trials and mostly resolved on their own. Marginal mandibular nerve injury, which can cause an uneven smile or muscle weakness, occurred in 4% of patients and cleared over a median of about 44 days. Trouble swallowing occurred in 2% and cleared over a median of 3 days. Working with an injector who maps the injection zone matters, which is why the area under your chin is measured and marked before any product goes in.

FAQ

Your questions,  answered

We’ve answered some of the most common questions below to help make your experience simple, transparent, and stress-free.

Kybella is an FDA-approved injection containing deoxycholic acid—a molecule your body naturally produces to break down fat. We inject it into the fat under the chin ("double chin"), and it permanently destroys those fat cells. Your body then clears them out over the following weeks. Results are permanent because the cells are gone.

What is Kybella and what does it treat?

Treatments are scheduled at least 4 weeks apart. A series of up to 6 treatments may be needed—the exact number depends on the amount of fat being treated and your individual goals. We assess at each visit and stop when we've reached your goal.

How many Kybella sessions will I need?

There's burning and stinging during and immediately after injection that lasts 10–20 minutes. We apply ice before and after to minimize. Most patients tolerate it well; some describe it as the most uncomfortable injectable they've had. The trade-off: permanent fat destruction.

Does Kybella hurt?

Recovery is about 14 days. Significant swelling under the chin for the first week—you'll look more puffy before you look slimmer. This is the deoxycholic acid actively destroying fat cells. Bruising is common. Mild numbness for 1–4 weeks is normal. Plan around social events.

What's the recovery from Kybella?

Results may be seen as early as 4 to 6 weeks; full results from a complete series are typically visible at 12 weeks after the last session. Each session adds to the previous; the cumulative effect is visible chin and jawline definition.

When will I see Kybella results?

Kybella is $650 per syringe. Per-session cost depends on the amount of fat being treated (typically 1–2 syringes per session). A series of up to 6 sessions may be needed. Full series typically runs $1,300–$5,200 depending on size of treatment area. Members receive discounted pricing.

How much does Kybella cost in Lubbock?

Yes—the fat cells we destroy are gone. They don't regenerate. The remaining fat cells in the area can still expand if you gain weight, but the total volume of fat in that pocket is permanently reduced. Most patients maintain results with stable weight.

Are Kybella results permanent?

Best candidates: adults with moderate-to-significant fat under the chin and good skin elasticity. Patients with very loose skin under the chin may need a skin-tightening treatment (RF microneedling, plasma pen) in addition to or instead of Kybella. We assess skin quality at consultation. Pregnant/breastfeeding patients should wait.

Am I a candidate for Kybella?

FDA approval is for submental fat (under the chin). Off-label use includes small fat pockets on the jowls, bra fat, knees, and inner thighs, though we limit off-label use to specific cases. For body fat in larger areas, treatments like CoolSculpting are more appropriate. Discuss at consultation.

Can Kybella treat fat anywhere besides the chin?

Kybella is non-surgical, with no scars, no general anesthesia, and recovery in days. Surgery (liposuction or neck lift) addresses both fat and loose skin in one procedure, with one recovery. Kybella is better for moderate fat and good skin elasticity. Surgery is better for significant fat plus skin laxity. We'll discuss honestly at consultation.

Kybella vs surgery—which should I choose?

Common: significant swelling (expected), bruising, mild numbness in the treated area for weeks. Rare: nerve injury causing temporary smile asymmetry (resolves over weeks-months), trouble swallowing (very rare), injection site hardness. We're trained in the exact anatomical placement to minimize risks.

What are Kybella side effects?

Book a complimentary consultation. We'll evaluate the fat pad and your skin, discuss whether Kybella, RF skin tightening, or a combination is right for you, and give you honest pricing. Call (806) 701-5840 or book online.
