Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy closes spider veins on the legs with a sclerosant injected through a fine needle. $450 per session, most veins fade over three to six weeks.

How long a sclerotherapy appointment takes

A sclerotherapy session at The Spa by Sheena runs about 60 minutes and costs $450. Veins usually respond over three to six weeks, and more than one session is common.

What kind of treatment is sclerotherapy?

A cosmetic vein procedure performed by Becca (MSN, FNP-C) or Angie (RN) under our medical director, Dr. Arledge, a plastic surgeon.

Where we treat spider veins

Spider veins on the legs. Sclerotherapy works better on leg veins than facial ones; tiny facial vessels are usually better treated another way.

What sclerotherapy treats

For visible spider veins that bother you cosmetically. If the veins sit on top of chronic venous insufficiency, that needs a different evaluation, and we will tell you.

Injection treatment that seals and fades spider veins

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is the standard treatment for visible spider veins on the legs. If you have thin red or blue web-pattern veins on your thighs, knees, calves, or ankles that you notice every time you put on shorts, sclerotherapy is the treatment that clears them. A sclerosing solution (sodium tetradecyl sulfate) is injected directly into each visible vein through a very fine needle. The solution irritates the vein wall from the inside, the vein collapses and seals, and over the next 4 to 8 weeks your body clears the closed vessel through normal circulation. The result is visibly clearer skin.

How much does sclerotherapy cost at The Spa by Sheena? A single session runs $450. Most patients need 2 to 4 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart for full clearance of the visible veins on both legs. Each session addresses whatever is visible at that appointment and treats multiple veins per session, not one at a time.

We treat small to medium spider veins (medically called telangiectasias) and reticular veins on the thighs, knees, calves, and ankles. Larger varicose veins that are bulging, rope-like, or connected to deeper venous insufficiency need a different modality (endovenous laser or surgical treatment) and belong with a vascular specialist. If your veins are large enough that you can feel them under the skin as ropes or bulges, we will refer out at consultation.

A sclerotherapy session runs 30 to 45 minutes. Your provider maps the veins to be treated, then injects the solution vein by vein. Most patients describe the sensation as a brief burning or cramping that resolves within seconds after each injection. You leave in compression stockings and walk out on your own.

Wear compression stockings continuously for the first 24 to 48 hours, then during the day for the next several days. Walk every hour or two. Avoid hot baths, hot tubs, and saunas for 2 weeks. Skip heavy leg exercise for 48 hours. Treated veins look bruised or reddish for 1 to 3 weeks before they fade. Best season to start a sclerotherapy series is fall or winter, when compression stockings are easier to wear and sun-exposed post-treatment bruising is less likely.

What to expect from sclerotherapy

Immediately after treatment, treated veins look bruised and reddish. Some appear darker before they fade. Mild discomfort, achiness, or tightness in the legs for 1 to 2 days is normal.

Wear compression stockings continuously for the first 24 to 48 hours, then during the day for the next several days. Walk every 1 to 2 hours; avoid sitting or standing still for extended periods.

Skip hot baths, hot tubs, and saunas for 2 weeks. Skip heavy lower-body exercise (squats, running, jumping) for 48 hours. Most bruising clears within 7 to 14 days. Visible vein fading takes 4 to 8 weeks per session. Results are progressive over the full treatment course.

PROVEN TREATMENT

Sclerotherapy has been the gold-standard treatment for spider veins for decades.

Inside a sclerotherapy appointment

Sclerotherapy is a treatment for spider veins, the small red or blue vessels that sit just under the skin, most often on the legs. Doctors call them telangiectasias. A provider injects a sclerosant solution directly into the vessel with a very fine needle. The solution irritates the vein's lining so the walls swell, stick together, and seal shut. Once the vessel is closed, blood reroutes through healthier veins nearby, and your body slowly absorbs the treated vein over the following weeks.

Spider veins on the legs are usually a cosmetic concern, not a medical one. Sometimes, though, they sit on top of a larger issue called chronic venous insufficiency, which needs a different kind of evaluation. Part of your visit is sorting out which situation you are in. If your veins point to something deeper, we will tell you and help you find the right care.

At The Spa by Sheena, sclerotherapy is one option on our injectables menu, and a session is $450. It is performed by our injectors, Becca (MSN, FNP-C) and Angie (RN), under the oversight of our medical director, Dr. Arledge, a plastic surgeon. We have run this spa since 2016. Every plan starts with a consultation, because the number of vessels, their size, and your health history all shape whether sclerotherapy is a good fit and how many sessions it may take.

Wear compression stockings for 5 to 7 days after

Before your first sclerotherapy treatment

Spider veins usually respond over three to six weeks, though it can take up to two months to see the full result. More than one session is common. If you need another round, it is typically scheduled a couple of months after the first.

There is little downtime. Most people walk out and get back to their day. You will likely be asked to wear compression stockings for one to three weeks, to walk daily, and to skip strenuous exercise, hot baths, and saunas for a few days. Stay out of direct sun on the treated area for about two weeks, since sun raises the odds of dark marks, and use sunscreen.

Side effects are usually mild and temporary. Bruising and small raised, red spots at the injection sites are common. Some people develop brown lines or spots along the treated vein, called hyperpigmentation; for most, these fade over several months to a year. A smaller number notice a fine web of tiny new vessels near the treated area, called matting, which also tends to clear on its own within a few months. We will walk you through what to watch for.

Sclerotherapy is not for everyone. It is not done during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you have an active blood clot. A past blood clot does not automatically rule you out; it depends on what caused it, and your provider will ask. Sclerotherapy also works better on leg veins than facial ones. For tiny broken vessels on the face, an IPL photofacial or electrocauterization is often the better tool, and we can talk through those at your visit.

FAQ

Your questions,  answered

We’ve answered some of the most common questions below to help make your experience simple, transparent, and stress-free.

Sclerotherapy is an injection treatment for visible spider veins—small blue or red veins on the legs—and small varicose veins. We inject a sclerosing solution directly into the vein, which causes the vein to collapse and seal off. Your body absorbs the closed vein over the following weeks, and blood reroutes through healthier vessels.

What is sclerotherapy and what does it treat?

Most patients require 2 to 3 sessions for optimal clearance, scheduled 4 to 6 weeks apart. Severity of the vein network determines exact number—a small cluster might clear in 1–2 sessions, while widespread spider veins may need the full series.

How many sclerotherapy sessions do I need?

There's a brief stinging or burning sensation as the solution is injected—lasts a few seconds per injection site. Most patients describe it as more uncomfortable than painful. We use the smallest possible needles and work efficiently. No numbing required.

Does sclerotherapy hurt?

Recovery is about 7 days. Wear compression stockings for 5–7 days. Avoid hot baths, saunas, and intense leg exercise for one week. Light walking is encouraged. Bruising at injection sites is normal for 1–3 weeks.

What's the recovery from sclerotherapy?

Treated veins start to fade within 2–6 weeks as your body absorbs them. A follow-up appointment is recommended 4 to 6 weeks after your initial treatment to assess results. Larger veins take longer than smaller ones.

When will I see sclerotherapy results?

Sclerotherapy is $450 per session. Most patients need 2 to 3 sessions per area, scheduled 4 to 6 weeks apart. Series pricing available.

How much does sclerotherapy cost in Lubbock?

Treated veins don't come back—they're permanently closed and absorbed. But new spider veins can develop over time due to genetics, hormonal changes, pregnancy, prolonged standing, or aging. Annual maintenance is common. The veins we treat today won't return; new ones may appear in different locations.

Will spider veins come back after sclerotherapy?

Most adults with visible spider or small varicose veins are candidates. Not appropriate for patients who are pregnant, on certain blood thinners, with active blood clots, or with severe varicose veins requiring surgical evaluation. We screen at consultation and can refer to a vein specialist if your veins need more than what sclerotherapy can address.

Who's a candidate for sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy works on smaller varicose veins. Large bulging varicose veins typically require ultrasound-guided treatment, endovenous laser ablation, or surgical intervention—procedures performed by vascular specialists. We'll evaluate at consultation and refer if your veins exceed what we treat in-office.

Can sclerotherapy treat larger varicose veins?

Book a complimentary leg vein consultation. We'll examine the veins, discuss your goals, and design a treatment plan with pricing. Call (806) 701-5840 or book online. Best to schedule treatment in fall/winter when compression stockings are easier to wear.
