What is PRP filler?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) filler is a regenerative treatment made from your own blood. A provider draws a small sample, spins it in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets, and injects that concentrate where you want to build tissue and improve skin quality. Because it comes from you, nothing synthetic goes in. At The Spa by Sheena, PRP filler is $700 per session, performed by our nurse practitioner Becca (MSN, FNP-C) or our RN Angie, under the oversight of our medical director, Dr. Arledge, a plastic surgeon. We have been doing injectable and regenerative work in Lubbock since 2016. One honest note up front: PRP is not an FDA-approved drug or treatment. It is a procedure, and the evidence behind it as a facial treatment is promising but still limited. A consultation is the right place to learn what it can and cannot do for you. What to expect from a PRP filler appointment

Your first visit is a consultation. Becca or Angie reviews your health history, the medications you take, and what you want to change before anyone recommends a plan. PRP is not right for everyone. It is generally not done if you have a bleeding disorder or a low platelet count, if you take blood-thinning medication, or if you have an active infection in the area. It is not used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Tell your provider your full history and every medication you are on.

On treatment day, expect minimal downtime. Because the injections are small, you may see some redness, a little swelling, or a bruise where the needle went in. For most people that settles within a day or two, though the thin skin under the eyes can stay puffy or bruised a bit longer. Most head back to their normal day afterward.

Be patient with results. Any change is gradual and builds over weeks to a few months as new collagen forms. Results are not permanent, and how long they hold varies enough that we would rather talk it through than quote a number we cannot stand behind. PRP is not a guarantee, and no honest provider will promise one. If under-eye hollowing is your main concern, your provider may also walk you through under-eye filler so you can compare.

Your platelets carry growth factors, the signaling proteins your body uses to repair itself. PRP filler concentrates those growth factors and places them in the skin, where they are thought to prompt collagen and improve tone and texture over time. It works by asking your own tissue to rebuild, so any change is gradual rather than instant. Providers often use it in the delicate under-eye area, where skin quality matters as much as volume.

Here is how a session works. A provider draws a small amount of your blood, the way a routine lab draw feels. That blood goes into a centrifuge, an FDA-cleared device that spins it fast enough to separate the platelet-rich layer from the rest. Be clear on what that clearance means: the FDA clears the centrifuge, but it has not approved PRP itself as a cosmetic treatment, so this use is considered off-label. Your provider then injects the concentrated plasma into the treatment areas. The whole visit takes well under an hour.

Most people are treated in a short series of sessions a few weeks apart, sometimes with maintenance later on, though that plan is not standardized. The studies behind facial PRP are mostly small and dose the plasma in different ways, which is a real reason results differ from one person to the next. Reviewers call the evidence encouraging but not yet settled, so your provider will build a plan around your skin and your goals.

How PRP filler compares to hyaluronic acid filler

The word "filler" can be misleading, so here is the honest comparison. A traditional dermal filler is made of hyaluronic acid, a gel that adds volume the moment it is injected. PRP filler is a different material doing a different job. It comes from your own platelets, does not instantly plump an area, and works by prompting your skin to rebuild over time. Want an immediate lift in a hollow cheek or a lip? Hyaluronic-acid filler is the tool for that. Want to build skin quality gradually with nothing synthetic? PRP is worth a conversation.

One more practical difference: a hyaluronic-acid filler can be dissolved. If you dislike the result, a provider can inject hyaluronidase to break it down. PRP cannot be reversed that way. There is no gel to dissolve, only your own plasma, which your body absorbs. Neither approach wins across the board, and that trade-off is what a consultation sorts out.
