What is Dysport?

Dysport is a wrinkle relaxer — same family as Botox, made by a company called Galderma. It works the same way Botox does: your injector places small doses in the muscles that create your expression lines, the muscles relax, and the lines soften. It's the second most popular wrinkle relaxer in the country.

So why choose Dysport over Botox? Two main reasons. First, it kicks in faster — most clients see softening within 2 to 3 days versus 3 to 5 days for Botox. That's the difference between "I have an event Friday" and "I have an event next week." Second, Dysport spreads a little more once it's in the muscle, so it covers wide areas like your forehead really well.

Cost is about the same as Botox per visit. Dysport is priced at $5 per unit versus Botox's $14, but you need more units of Dysport to get the same effect. It works out to a similar bill either way.

Dysport has been used around the world for more than 25 years and FDA-approved here since 2009.

What to expect from your Dysport appointment

You will not see a change the day of your appointment. Most people start to notice movement easing within one to three days, a touch sooner than Botox for many, with the full effect settling in around two weeks. Give it the full two weeks before you judge the result. Dysport is temporary. It fades gradually, and most people come back for maintenance in about three to four months. Nothing about it is permanent.

In the first few days you may see small bumps, redness, or a little bruising where the needle went in, and some people get a mild headache. These are common and short-lived. A less common effect is a temporary droop of the eyelid or brow, called ptosis, which can happen if a little product settles into a nearby muscle. It resolves on its own as the Dysport wears off. We cannot promise a specific outcome, and results do vary from one person to the next.

Dysport is not right for everyone. It should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It is not recommended if you have a neuromuscular condition such as myasthenia gravis, ALS, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, since these can raise the risk of muscle weakness. Tell your injector if you take an aminoglycoside antibiotic like gentamicin, because it can amplify the effect. Dysport also carries a trace of cow's milk protein, so it is not for you if you have a milk-protein allergy. Inside a Dysport appointment

Every Dysport appointment starts with a short consultation. Your injector watches how your face moves at rest and in motion, asks about your health history and the medications you take, and maps where each small injection goes. Dysport is placed with a very fine needle in a series of quick injections, and the visit usually takes about 15 minutes. Because the product spreads a little from each point, your injector may space the injections differently than she would for Botox, especially across the forehead. Your injector is Becca, MSN, FNP-C, or Angie, RN, both working under our medical director Dr. Arledge, a plastic surgeon. The Spa has been open in Lubbock since 2016.

Dysport is billed by the unit, not as a flat per-area price and not as a package. At $5 per unit, your total depends on how many units your muscles need, and because Dysport units are smaller than Botox units, that count runs higher than a Botox count would for the same area. Your injector sets the number at your visit rather than over the phone, so we will not quote you a random figure ahead of time. We do not accept or bill insurance, and cosmetic neurotoxin is never covered anywhere.

How Dysport compares to Botox, Daxxify, and Xeomin

Dysport and Botox are close cousins. Both are botulinum toxin type A, both quiet the muscle that creases the skin above it, and both wear off on their own. The differences are small but real. Dysport is often noticed a little sooner, sometimes in one to three days rather than the few days Botox usually takes. It also tends to spread a bit more from each injection point, so it can suit a broad, flat area like the forehead. That spread is not a fixed rule, though. How far the product travels depends on the dose and on your injector's technique, which is one more reason the person holding the syringe matters more than the brand on the vial.

Now the part that trips people up. Dysport is $5 per unit at The Spa, and Botox is $14 per unit. That looks like a big gap, and it is not. Dysport units and Botox units are not the same size. It takes roughly 2.5 to 3 Dysport units to do the work of 1 Botox unit, so a Dysport treatment simply uses more units. The lower per-unit price does not mean a cheaper visit. Do not line the two up by unit price alone. The honest way to compare is the total for your treatment, which your injector works out once she sees how your face moves. Yes—and many patients try both to see which they prefer. They're not cross-reactive in any negative way. Some patients prefer Dysport's slightly broader spread; others prefer Botox's more precise placement. There's no harm in switching.

Can I switch from Botox to Dysport (or vice versa)?

Rare—similar resistance profile to Botox. Both contain accessory proteins that theoretically could trigger antibody response over years of frequent dosing. Xeomin is the alternative for patients who develop resistance. Vast majority of patients don't experience this issue.
