Nasolabial fold filler generally lasts about nine months to a year and a half. Longevity varies with the product, the amount used, and your metabolism. Filler fades gradually with no fixed expiration date, so most people return for a touch-up when they notice the fold softening rather than on a set schedule.

What is nasolabial fold filler?

Nasolabial folds are the two lines that run from the sides of the nose down to the corners of the mouth. Most people call them smile lines. Filler here is a hyaluronic acid gel, the same family of gel we use across our other dermal fillers, and it softens the crease by adding volume back where the face has lost it. Here is the part that changes how you should think about treatment. A nasolabial fold is usually not a wrinkle in the skin. It deepens because the midface above it loses its support. The fat pads that once sat high on the cheek shrink and drift downward with age, the bone underneath thins, and the soft tissue slides toward the mouth and stacks up along the fold. So the line near the mouth is often the result of volume disappearing higher up.

That points to two different ways to treat the fold, and the better one is not always the obvious one. We can place filler right in the fold to soften it. What to expect from your nasolabial filler appointment

Mild swelling and possible bruising for 3 to 7 days. The area is less swelling-prone than lips or under-eyes. Some patients see immediate softening; others notice continued improvement over 2 weeks as the product integrates.

Skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours. Avoid blood thinners 48 hours before and after. Avoid pressing on the area for 2 weeks. Sleep on your back the first night.

Final result at 2 to 4 weeks. The fold should be softened, not eliminated. Complete removal often looks unnatural and can flatten the face.

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar your body already makes, and it pulls in and holds water, which is how the gel adds fullness the moment it is placed. How long it lasts depends on the product, how much is used, and your own metabolism. Filler in this area generally holds somewhere around nine months to a year and a half. It fades slowly, with no set end date, so the cue for a touch-up is the softening you notice, not a date on the calendar.

Most people find it more comfortable than they feared. The filler carries lidocaine to numb the area as it goes in, and your injector usually applies a numbing cream first. Expect some swelling, and maybe a small bruise. Swelling tends to peak in the first day or two and eases over the next several days. Do not judge the result on day one. One risk deserves to be said plainly, and it is the reason this area is treated with extra care. The region beside the nose is one of the face's recognized higher-risk zones for injection. The facial artery becomes the angular artery close to the base of the nose and runs near the surface at the top of the fold, so filler placed carelessly there can enter or press on that vessel and block blood flow. This is called a vascular occlusion. It is uncommon, but it is the serious complication, and it is exactly why the injector's knowledge of the anatomy matters more than the price. Caught early, it is usually treatable. Becca and Angie are trained to read the early warning signs, with Dr. Arledge overseeing the practice.

There is a real safety net with hyaluronic acid: it can be undone. If you dislike the result, or in the rare emergency above, a provider can inject hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks the gel down so your body clears it. This treatment is not right for every moment. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, tell your injector, since it is not recommended then, as a precaution. Hold off if you have an active breakout or skin infection over the area, or if an autoimmune condition is flaring. If you are prone to cold sores, mention it, because a needle near the mouth can wake the virus.
