Cheek filler generally lasts one to two years. Voluma is the longer-lasting option and is studied to last up to two years with optimal treatment. Longevity varies with the product, the amount used, and your metabolism. There is no fixed expiration date; most people return for a touch-up when they notice the lift softening.

What is cheek filler?

Cheek filler at The Spa by Sheena is a hyaluronic acid gel placed deep in the midface to rebuild the volume that sits over the cheekbone. It runs $750 to $1,000 per syringe. We work with Voluma, an Allergan gel in the Juvederm family, along with Restylane Lyft and Contour from Galderma and RHA-4 from Revance. These gels are firmer than the ones used in the lips, because the cheek needs a product that holds structure and gives the face lift. Becca (MSN, FNP-C) and Angie (RN) do the injecting, under our medical director Dr. Arledge, a plastic surgeon. We have been treating faces in Lubbock since 2016.

With age the fat pads that once sat high on the cheek shrink and slide downward, so the face flattens across the middle and starts to read as tired. Adding volume at the cheekbone does more than round out the cheek. It rebuilds the support structure of the midface and lifts the tissue below it. What to expect from your cheek filler appointment

Some swelling for 24 to 72 hours. Cheek swelling is generally subtler than lip filler. Bruising is possible but less common with cannula technique. Initial fullness may look slightly exaggerated for the first few days before settling.

Skip strenuous exercise for 24 hours. Avoid blood thinners 48 hours before and after. Sleep on your back the first 1 to 2 nights. Avoid pressing or massaging the cheeks for 2 weeks unless instructed.

Final settled result at 2 to 4 weeks. The lift effect on surrounding structures (jowls softening, nasolabial folds shallower) becomes visible over the first month.

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar the body already makes, and it pulls in and holds water, which is how the gel adds fullness the moment it is placed. How long it lasts depends on the product, the amount used, and your own metabolism. Cheek filler generally holds one to two years. Voluma is the longer-lasting option here: it was FDA-approved for cheek augmentation back in 2013 and is studied to last up to two years with optimal treatment. Filler fades gradually, with no set end date, so the cue for a touch-up is the lift starting to soften, not a date on the calendar.

Most people find it far more comfortable than they feared. The filler carries lidocaine to numb as it goes in, and your injector usually applies a numbing cream first. Cheek filler is often placed with a blunt-tipped cannula instead of a needle. The cannula slides under the skin, tends to bruise less, and is one of the ways a skilled injector lowers risk in this part of the face. Expect some swelling and the chance of a bruise. One risk is worth stating plainly. Rarely, filler can enter a blood vessel or press on one and block blood flow, which is called a vascular occlusion. It is uncommon, but it is the serious complication, and the midface carries vessels that make an injector's knowledge of the anatomy matter. Caught quickly, it is usually treatable, often with that same hyaluronidase. This is the real reason to choose experience over the lowest price. Becca and Angie are trained in midface anatomy and know the early warning signs, with Dr. Arledge overseeing the practice.

Cheek filler is not for every moment. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, tell your injector; it is not recommended then, as a precaution. Hold off if you have an active skin infection or breakout over the cheek, or if an autoimmune condition is flaring. If you are prone to cold sores, mention it, since injections in the face can wake the virus.
