Switching From Electrolysis to Laser Hair Removal in Lubbock: When It Makes Sense

Sheena Klos, CIDESCO Certified Master Medical Esthetician, has noticed a pattern over the years: clients coming in after spending significant time on electrolysis who were actually strong candidates for laser hair removal. In some cases, they may have been able to treat larger areas more efficiently with laser from the start.
When a client’s hair and skin have high contrast, Sheena moves them from electrolysis to laser hair removal. The laser targets that hair better, and results come faster.
That doesn’t mean electrolysis is the wrong choice. Both treatments have their place. The difference comes down to different factors including your hair color, skin tone, treatment area, and what you’re hoping to accomplish. So how do you know which one actually makes sense for you?
How Each Treatment Works
Laser hair removal uses Diolaze XL by InMode, a diode laser that targets the pigment in the hair and heats the follicle to slow future growth. It treats a whole area at once.
Electrolysis sends a small electrical current through a fine probe into one follicle at a time, so it works on any hair color. For the full side-by-side, read our guide to electrolysis vs. laser hair removal in Lubbock.
Why Clients Switch From Electrolysis to Laser Hair Removal
We’ve had several clients come to us after already spending time with electrolysis, and in some cases, laser hair removal ended up being a better fit for what they were trying to treat. The common thread wasn’t that electrolysis was “wrong”, it was that their hair color, treatment area, or amount of hair made laser a more efficient option.
The clients who make the switch usually have dark hair against lighter skin. That contrast gives the laser a clear target, so they need fewer sessions and see results sooner. Often, no one had walked them through whether their hair was a good match for laser.
That said, there are also clients who should stay with electrolysis, especially those with blonde, white, gray, or red hair, which the laser can’t target well.
Our goal isn’t to push everyone toward one treatment. It’s to look at what you’re working with and choose the tool that makes the most sense for your hair, your skin, and your goals.
When Laser Hair Removal Is the Better Fit
Laser hair removal is usually the better fit when you have darker hair with enough pigment for the laser to target, especially when there is a noticeable contrast between the hair and your skin. That is what makes it a great option for common treatment areas like the underarms, bikini area, legs, back, chest, chin, and upper lip.
It can also make a lot more sense when you are treating a larger area. Instead of working hair by hair, laser can treat many follicles at once, which is why it is often a more practical choice for areas like full legs or the back.
At The Spa, most laser hair removal areas need six or more treatments, spaced a few weeks apart, because hair grows in different cycles and not every follicle can be treated effectively at the same time.
One study also found laser treatment was significantly faster and less painful than electrolysis, with better hair clearance at six months. When your hair is a good match for laser, it can save a lot of time.
When Electrolysis Is the Better Fit
Electrolysis is often the better choice when the hair is blonde, white, gray, or red, because those hairs do not have enough pigment for laser to target effectively. Since electrolysis treats the follicle directly rather than relying on pigment, it can work across a much wider range of hair colors and skin tones.
It also makes sense for smaller, more precise areas, like the upper lip, chin, or brows, where treating one follicle at a time can be useful.
The tradeoff is time. Because electrolysis works hair by hair, it usually takes more appointments to complete a treatment plan. At The Spa, most areas may require 12–18 or more sessions over one to two years, with appointments typically spaced every two to four weeks. So while electrolysis can be the right answer for hairs laser cannot effectively treat, it is usually a more detailed, longer-term process. For the right person, though, that precision is exactly what makes it valuable.
Permanent Reduction vs. Permanent Removal
This is one of the most important differences to understand before choosing a treatment. Laser hair removal is considered permanent hair reduction, meaning you can see a significant, long-lasting decrease in hair growth, but it does not guarantee that every hair is gone forever. Hormonal changes or changes in the body can sometimes cause follicles to become active again.
Electrolysis is considered permanent hair removal. Once a follicle has been successfully treated, that follicle should no longer produce hair.
Plenty of articles call electrolysis the more permanent option. In Sheena’s experience, laser results on good candidates hold up just as well. The bigger question is whether your hair is a good match for the laser in the first place. Laser may need an occasional maintenance session, especially if hormones shift.
Who Should Be Cautious With Each Treatment
Neither treatment is right for every situation. With electrolysis, talk with your esthetician first if you have a pacemaker or another implanted electrical device. It’s also generally avoided during pregnancy and should not be performed over an active skin infection or cold sores.
With laser hair removal, darker skin tones can be treated. Our providers use gentler settings, which can mean a few more sessions, because darker skin carries a higher risk of hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation (spots that heal darker or lighter). Going slower keeps results safe.

Common Questions About Electrolysis and Laser Hair Removal in Lubbock
Does laser hair removal work on blonde, gray, or red hair?
Not well. Those hairs don’t have enough pigment for the laser to target, which is why electrolysis is usually the better choice for them.
Can laser hair removal be done on darker skin?
Yes. Our providers use gentler settings on darker skin to lower the risk of pigment changes, which can mean a few more sessions.
How many sessions will I need?
At The Spa, most laser hair removal areas need six or more sessions spaced a few weeks apart. Electrolysis usually takes 12–18 or more sessions over one to two years.
