Pigmentation Laser Aftercare

POST CARE GUIDE

Pigmentation Laser Aftercare

IPL and pigmentation laser treatments use pulses of broad-spectrum light to target the melanin in sun spots, age spots, freckles, and — carefully — melasma, breaking the pigment apart so your body can clear it. The signature look afterward is the "coffee grounds" effect: treated spots darken first, then flake away over one to two weeks. This guide from The Spa by Sheena in Lubbock walks you through the whole recovery — the brief redness, the darken-then-flake timeline, the strict daily sun and heat protection that makes or breaks your result, and why melasma is managed with a gentle series rather than cured in a single visit.

Your Pigmentation Laser recovery at a glance

What happens, and when

Here is the path from treatment day to final result.

Days 1 to 3

Pepper darkening

Days 1 to 3: the spots we treated darken and take on a coffee-grounds or peppered look as the shattered pigment rises to the surface. This is a sign the treatment is working, not a burn or something going wrong. Cleanse gently, keep your hands off, and do not scrub, exfoliate, or pick at the darkened flecks — let them sit and start their slow lift.

Days 5 to 10

Flake and shed

Days 5 to 10: the darkened pigment dries into tiny micro-crusts that flake and shed on their own, uncovering clearer skin beneath. Let every flake fall on its own timeline — picking or peeling a crust early can trade a brown spot for a scar or a pale patch in the very area you just cleared. Keep the skin moisturized so it sheds cleanly and comfortably.

2 to 4 Weeks

Strict sun avoidance

2 to 4 weeks: stay out of direct sun and wear broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every single day, reapplying every two hours whenever you are outdoors. This is the step that protects your result — UV and heat both drive pigment right back, and on melasma-prone skin they can undo the whole session. Add a wide-brimmed hat and shade when you are outside.

How to care for skin during the darken-and-flake phase

How to Care for Your Skin After an IPL Photofacial

Hyaluronic acid (for hydration)

Hydration is what lets the darkened pigment shed cleanly instead of clinging to dry, tight skin. Apply Hydrinity Restorative HA as often as your skin wants it — a hyaluronic serum pulls water into the surface and keeps the healing layer supple through the flaking phase. Follow with a bland, fragrance-free moisturizer to seal it in. Well-hydrated skin is more comfortable, less itchy, and far less tempting to pick at while it sheds.

Cool compress (first 24 hours)

For the first 24 hours, a cool compress calms the heat and tightness that follow treatment. Wrap a clean, damp cloth or a cold pack in a soft towel and hold it to the area for 10 to 15 minutes at a time, with breaks in between. Never rest ice directly on the skin — freshly treated skin is vulnerable, and direct ice can cause a cold injury of its own. Keep the pressure light and let the skin rest. If warmth or redness is still climbing after the first day rather than easing, let us know.

Daily SPF 75 (mandatory)

Daily sunscreen is not optional after this treatment — it is the single most important thing you do. Apply SkinBetter Science Tone Smart SPF 75 every morning and reapply every two hours whenever you are outside. A mineral formula with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide sits on top of the skin and is gentlest on freshly treated pigment. Sun exposure during recovery drives new pigment straight back to the surface and can erase the progress you just made. No SPF, no lasting clearance — it is that direct.

Strict sun protection (4 weeks)

Beyond daily sunscreen, actively stay out of the sun for at least four weeks. Seek shade, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and skip tanning beds and long stretches outdoors during peak hours. Freshly treated skin is primed to over-produce pigment, so UV — and even the visible light on a bright, overcast day — can spark fresh dark spots right where you cleared them. This matters most for melasma, which is fueled by sun and heat and rebounds fast; a few careful weeks now protects months of progress.

Pause active skincare (1 week)

Give your routine a rest for about a week. Set aside retinoids and retinol, vitamin C, and exfoliating acids like glycolic, lactic, and salicylic, along with scrubs and cleansing brushes. These are wonderful ingredients on healthy skin, but on skin that is shedding pigment they sting, over-exfoliate, and can trigger the very inflammation that leads to new dark spots. Stick to a gentle cleanser, hyaluronic hydration, and SPF, then bring your actives back one at a time once the flaking is done and the skin no longer feels tender.

Makeup after 30 minutes

You can wear makeup, but give the skin a little time first. Wait at least 30 minutes after treatment, and a full 24 hours is better, so the surface can settle and any pigment that is going to surface can begin to. When you do apply it, use clean brushes and gentle, non-comedogenic mineral products, and take it off at night with a soft, non-abrasive cleanser rather than scrubbing pads or wipes. Once the darkened spots start to flake, mineral makeup can lightly camouflage them while they finish shedding.

Pigment darkening, flaking, and what is normal

What's Normal: IPL Photofacial Downtime

Normal, temporary, and part of the process.

Clear and brighter (days 10 to 14)

By the end of the second week the shedding is done, and the treated spots look noticeably lighter, softer, and more even than they did before. Skin often reads brighter and clearer overall. Keep in mind that pigment keeps fading for several more weeks as your body finishes clearing what the light broke up, so what you see at two weeks continues to improve. If a few spots are still faintly visible, that is common — layered or stubborn pigment usually needs more than one session, and we plan the next in your series around that.

Slight bumpy texture (days 2 to 7)

During the shedding window, treated areas can feel slightly rough, grainy, or bumpy — almost like fine sandpaper — where the darkened pigment sits at the surface. This is normal and temporary; it is the micro-crusts you can feel more than see. Wash with a gentle, non-foaming cleanser and lukewarm water, pat dry, and keep a light moisturizer on top. Skip scrubs, cleansing brushes, and exfoliating acids until the texture smooths out and the flaking has fully finished, usually by the end of the first week.

Flaking and shedding (days 7 to 10)

Once the pigment has darkened, it begins to lift and flake away, usually between days 7 and 10 on the face; skin on the chest, arms, and hands often takes several weeks longer. As it sheds you may feel tiny dark micro-crusts loosen and fall off, leaving fresher, more even skin underneath. Let every flake release on its own timeline. Picking, peeling, or buffing off a crust before it is ready can trade a brown spot for a scar or a pale white patch — the opposite of what we want. Keep the skin moisturized so it sheds cleanly.

Pigment darkening (days 1 to 3)

Over the first 24 to 48 hours the spots we treated get darker, not lighter — this is the moment people worry, and it is exactly what should happen. The light shatters the pigment and lifts it toward the surface, so freckles, sun spots, and age spots take on a scattered coffee-grounds or peppered look. Deeper or larger spots tend to darken most dramatically. Resist the urge to scrub, exfoliate, or pick at them; treat the skin gently and let the pigment make its slow rise on its own.

Redness and warmth (a few hours)

Right after treatment your skin looks flushed and feels warm, tight, and a little tender, much like a mild sunburn. That is simply your skin reacting to the light energy, and for most people it settles within a few hours, sometimes lingering up to a full 24. A cool compress and gentle handling make it more comfortable, and most clients head straight back to work or errands the same day. If the warmth turns into real pain, blistering, or swelling that keeps building instead of easing, that is outside the normal range — call us.

Sun and heat to avoid in the weeks after

What to Avoid After an IPL Photofacial

restriction-icon-gold.png

Waxing & Hair Removal

No waxing, depilatories, or electrolysis on the treated area for at least 2 weeks. These can irritate the freshly-treated skin and worsen the flaking phase.

restriction-icon-gold.png

Hot Showers

No hot showers or steam-room visits for 48 hours. Lukewarm water only — heat extends the post-treatment redness and can irritate the darkening pigment.

restriction-icon-gold.png

Sun & Tanning (2 to 4 weeks)

Avoid direct sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanner for at least 2 to 4 weeks. Sun on recently-treated skin causes new hyperpigmentation and undoes the work.

restriction-icon-gold.png

Sweating & Heat

Avoid sweating, strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and swimming for 24 hours. Heat dilates vessels and prolongs post-treatment redness.

Active Skincare

Avoid retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, vitamin C, and exfoliants for 1 week. Reintroduce slowly after flaking completes — vitamin C first, retinol last.

Picking & Scrubbing

Do not pick, scratch, or exfoliate the darkened pigment. Let it flake off on its own. Picking causes scarring and hypopigmentation (permanent white patches) in the cleared spots.

FAQ

Your questions,  answered

We’ve answered some of the most common questions below to help make your experience simple, transparent, and stress-free.

IPL (intense pulsed light) uses broad-spectrum light to target pigmented spots and visible blood vessels in the skin. The light is absorbed by pigment in sun spots, age spots, freckles, and redness from broken capillaries or rosacea. The treated lesions darken, then flake away over 7–14 days. Result: more even tone.

What is IPL and what does it treat?

Laser uses a single focused wavelength for targeted treatment. IPL uses a range of wavelengths simultaneously—better for treating multiple pigment and vascular issues at once. IPL is excellent for sun damage, redness, and overall tone. Specific lasers are better for tattoos, hair, and certain pigmentation issues.

What's the difference between IPL and laser?

A series of 2 to 4 sessions, scheduled 4 weeks apart, is typically recommended for optimal clearance. Annual follow-up treatments may be required to maintain results, especially with continued sun exposure.

How many IPL sessions will I need?

Like a rubber band snap on the skin. Each pulse takes a fraction of a second. The full-face treatment takes 15–30 minutes. Most patients describe it as more tolerable than expected. We can apply topical numbing for sensitive patients, but most don't need it.

Does IPL hurt?

Recovery is about 10 days. Mild redness for a few hours after treatment. The distinctive part: brown spots will darken significantly within 24 hours (looks like coffee grounds on your skin)—this is normal and expected. Those darkened spots will flake off over 7–10 days as your skin sheds. Use SPF religiously during healing.

What's the recovery from IPL?

Visible broken capillaries, mild rosacea redness, sun damage, freckles, age spots, port wine stains (partial improvement), uneven tone overall. Combined with other treatments, IPL can improve general skin quality. Limited effect on active acne or deep wrinkles.

What can IPL treat besides brown spots?

IPL works best on lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick I–III). Darker skin tones (IV+) have higher risk of pigmentation issues with IPL. We screen at consultation. For darker skin we typically use other modalities (PiQo4 picosecond laser for pigmentation, gentler lasers for general rejuvenation).

Is IPL safe for all skin tones?

IPL Photo Facial ranges $250–$650 per session depending on area and treatment plan. Series of 3–4 sessions priced with package discount. Members receive reduced per-session pricing.

How much does IPL cost in Lubbock?

If you're pregnant, recently tanned, taking Accutane (within 6 months), on photosensitive medication, have active sun damage from recent burn, have active herpes outbreak in treatment area, or are darker skin tone (we'd use a different device). Best treatment season: fall/winter when sun exposure is minimal.

When should I avoid IPL?

No—IPL treats existing damage. New sun damage will accumulate from continued UV exposure. Daily SPF, hats, and sun avoidance are the only true prevention. Annual maintenance IPL after your initial series helps stay ahead of new damage.

Will IPL prevent future sun spots?

Yes—often combined with microneedling, peels, or laser facials for layered correction. We typically space combined treatments so skin can recover between. Your provider will design a multi-treatment plan if your goals warrant it.

Can IPL be combined with other treatments?

Book a complimentary skin consultation. We'll examine your tone, evaluate your skin type, recommend IPL or an alternative, and design a series with pricing. Call (806) 701-5840 or book online.
