Hyperhidrosis Botox in Lubbock: How to Stop Excessive Sweating With an FDA-Approved Treatment

You've stopped wearing certain shirts. You've changed how you shake hands. You time your bathroom stops on the way to meetings. Excessive sweating — clinically called hyperhidrosis — affects roughly 3% of the U.S. population, and most patients have organized their wardrobe and their social lives around hiding it for years before they hear there's a real treatment.

That treatment is Botox for hyperhidrosis — and it works.

Botox Is FDA-Approved for Hyperhidrosis

Most people associate Botox with wrinkle treatment. But Botox is FDA-approved for severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis (underarm sweating that hasn't responded to topical antiperspirants). It received that approval in 2004 — over 20 years of clinical data behind it.

Botox for hyperhidrosis in Lubbock is also widely used off-label for sweating of the palms, soles of the feet, scalp, and forehead, with substantial clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness in these areas as well.

How Botox Treats Hyperhidrosis

Sweating is triggered when your sympathetic nervous system signals your sweat glands to activate. Botox temporarily blocks the neurotransmitter (acetylcholine) that delivers that signal. The sweat glands stop receiving the message. They stop producing sweat in the treated area.

The effect is local — only the treated area is affected. Your body continues to sweat normally everywhere else, which is important for temperature regulation.

What to Expect at Your Session

Session length: 20–45 minutes depending on the area treated.

Procedure: The treatment area is mapped (a starch-iodine test is sometimes used for borderline cases) and a grid of small injections is placed across it using a very fine needle. Each injection takes one to two seconds.

Comfort: Topical numbing is applied before treatment. Underarm injections are well-tolerated by most patients. Palm and sole injections are more sensitive — additional numbing strategies (ice, vibration, nerve blocks) are commonly used.

Recovery: There's essentially no downtime. You can return to normal activities the same day, with minor avoidance of intense exercise for 24 hours.

Onset: Sweat reduction begins within 2–4 days. Full effect is reached at 2 weeks. The contrast between pre-treatment and post-treatment is often dramatic by week 3.

How Long Does It Last?

Most patients using Botox for hyperhidrosis in Lubbock experience significant sweat reduction for 4 to 7 months per treatment, with some patients reporting longer duration. Palms and soles often require slightly more frequent retreatment than underarms.

As the effect wears off, sweating gradually returns. You re-treat when symptoms return to a level that bothers you — most patients schedule maintenance treatments 2 times per year for underarms.

Where Botox for Hyperhidrosis Works

FDA-approved (severe primary):

  • Underarms (axillary hyperhidrosis)

Off-label, well-documented:

  • Palms (palmar hyperhidrosis)

  • Soles of feet (plantar hyperhidrosis)

  • Forehead and scalp (craniofacial hyperhidrosis)

  • Other localized areas of excessive sweating (under breasts, back, etc.)

Botox is not used for generalized whole-body sweating, which is usually secondary to another underlying condition that requires medical evaluation.

Will Insurance Cover It?

Sometimes. Coverage typically requires documentation that:

  • The hyperhidrosis is severe (interferes with daily activities)

  • Topical clinical-strength antiperspirants have been tried and failed

  • Other treatments (oral medications, iontophoresis) have been considered or tried

If you have insurance and want to pursue coverage, bring documentation of prior treatment attempts to your consultation. We can help you understand the documentation process, but specific coverage and reimbursement are between you and your insurance carrier.

Common Questions About Hyperhidrosis Botox in Lubbock

Will I sweat from somewhere else instead?

This concern is called "compensatory sweating" and is more common with surgical treatments (like ETS surgery) than with Botox. Botox treats only the injected area locally; your body continues to thermoregulate normally elsewhere. Most patients do not report significant sweating in new areas after Botox.

Is it safe to block sweating?

Yes, in the localized areas treated. You have millions of sweat glands across your body — temporarily blocking a few thousand in your underarms or palms does not impair temperature regulation. Botox for hyperhidrosis has over two decades of safety data.

How many injections will I need?

This varies by treatment area and is determined at your consultation. Underarms typically require a grid of multiple small injections per side. Palms and soles require more injections distributed across the affected area.

Does it hurt?

Underarms are well-tolerated with topical numbing — most patients describe minor pinching. Palms and soles are more sensitive, but additional comfort strategies (ice, vibration, Pro-Nox) are available and effective.

How much Botox will I need?

Dosing is individualized based on the area treated and severity of sweating. Your provider determines the appropriate dose at your consultation.

Will the same provider who does my cosmetic Botox treat my hyperhidrosis?

Yes. Both treatments are performed by our licensed clinical injector under our medical director's oversight. Many patients combine maintenance cosmetic Botox with hyperhidrosis treatment in the same visit.

Can I exercise after treatment?

Avoid intense exercise for 24 hours after treatment to reduce the risk of Botox migrating from the injection sites. Light activity is fine.

Who's a Good Candidate?

Most healthy adults with localized excessive sweating are good candidates. The strongest candidates:

  • Have tried clinical-strength antiperspirants without sufficient relief

  • Have sweating that's confined to specific areas (not whole-body)

  • Are not pregnant or nursing

  • Are not allergic to Botox or any component

  • Do not have neuromuscular conditions (myasthenia gravis, ALS, etc.)

If you have generalized excessive sweating affecting your entire body, we'll refer you for medical workup before treatment — generalized hyperhidrosis can occasionally signal an underlying condition that should be evaluated first.
