Cheek Filler in Lubbock: Restoring Midface Volume Without Looking Overdone

Woman in her mid-forties beside a bright window, soft light defining her natural cheekbone contour — cheek filler results at The Spa by Sheena in Lubbock

You've started noticing it in photos first. Your face looks flatter. The area under your eyes seems deeper. The apples of your cheeks—the part that used to catch light—aren't there anymore.

Midface volume loss is one of the earliest aging signs, and it throws off proportion in ways that feel hard to name. You just look older. Cheek filler restores that structure, but only if the injector understands facial anatomy and has the restraint to stop before it's obvious.

What Cheek Filler Actually Does

Cheek filler replaces lost volume in the midface—the area between your lower eyelid and the top of your smile line. As we age, fat pads descend and bone resorbs. The result is a flattened cheek, a hollowed look under the eyes, and longer-looking nasolabial folds.

Hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers are placed along the cheekbone or slightly deeper, depending on where volume is needed. The goal is to lift and support, not to enlarge.

Sheena Klos, Founder and CIDESCO Certified Master Medical Esthetician at The Spa by Sheena, sees this distinction missed constantly: "Most people don't want bigger cheeks. They want their cheeks back. The injectors at The Spa by Sheena know that requires a different injection strategy—one that focuses on the bone, not the soft tissue in front of it."

In Lubbock and across West Texas, sun exposure accelerates midface volume loss. UV damage breaks down collagen faster, and outdoor work or recreation means more cumulative exposure. Patients here often see midface changes earlier than their counterparts in less sun-intense climates.

The Overdone Look: Why Cheek Filler Goes Wrong

Pillow face. Apple cheeks. The pulled look. You've seen it.

It happens when filler is placed too far forward, when too much volume is used, or when the injector treats the cheek as a single unit rather than a layered structure. The face looks inflated rather than restored.

Technique matters more than product selection. A skilled injector using a mid-tier filler will produce better results than an inexperienced injector using the most expensive option on the market.

  • Placement depth: Filler should go on or near bone, not into the fat pad.

  • Injection plane: Supraperiosteal placement creates lift. Subcutaneous placement creates bulk.

  • Volume restraint: Most patients need 1-2 syringes total across both cheeks, not per side.

  • Proportion: The cheek should integrate with the rest of the face, not dominate it.

The Spa by Sheena uses a conservative approach. We treat in stages if needed, allowing tissue to settle before adding more. Overfilling is harder to reverse than underfilling is to correct.

Who Benefits from Cheek Filler in Lubbock

Good candidates have visible midface volume loss but still have skin elasticity. Filler works by lifting and supporting tissue—if the tissue has lost all structure, filler alone won't hold it.

You might benefit if:

  • Your cheeks look flat in photos compared to a few years ago.

  • The hollows under your eyes have deepened, making you look tired.

  • Your nasolabial folds look longer or more pronounced, even though the folds themselves haven't changed.

  • Your face looks heavier in the lower third because the midface has lost support.

Cheek filler is not a substitute for a facelift. If you have significant skin laxity or jowling, filler will add volume but won't redrape skin. That requires a surgical solution.

For patients in their 30s and 40s with early volume loss, filler is often the right first step. For patients in their 50s and beyond, we sometimes combine filler with Sculptra or hyperdilute Radiesse—both stimulate collagen over time and provide scaffolding that lasts longer than HA filler alone.

The Injection Process and What to Expect

Before injection, we assess your face in motion—smiling, talking, at rest. Midface volume loss often shows up more clearly in animation than in a static mirror view.

We use a blunt-tip cannula for most cheek filler injections. It reduces bruising risk and allows us to place product along the bone with fewer entry points. Topical numbing is applied first. Most patients describe the sensation as pressure rather than pain.

The session takes 20-30 minutes. You'll have some swelling immediately—that's the filler settling and your tissue responding. The area will feel firm for a few days.

We don't fill to the final result in one session. We place a conservative amount, let it integrate for two weeks, and have you return for assessment. If you need more, we add it then. This staged approach prevents overcorrection.

Recovery and Downtime After Cheek Filler

You can return to most normal activities immediately. Swelling peaks at 24-48 hours and resolves within a week for most patients.

Bruising is possible, especially if you take blood thinners or supplements like fish oil. We ask patients to avoid NSAIDs, alcohol, and intense exercise for 24 hours before and after treatment.

Post-treatment care matters. We send patients home with Hydrinity Restorative HA Serum to support hydration while the filler integrates. Once swelling has resolved, patients resume SkinBetter Science Sunscreen SPF 56 daily. West Texas sun will undo filler longevity faster than almost anything else.

Sleep elevated for the first two nights. Avoid pressing on the treated area or sleeping face-down. The filler needs time to settle into the injection plane.

How Long Cheek Filler Lasts in West Texas

Hyaluronic acid filler in the cheeks typically lasts 12-18 months. That's longer than filler in the lips, where constant movement breaks it down faster.

Sun exposure, smoking, and high metabolism reduce longevity. Patients who stay on a consistent skincare regimen and avoid unprotected UV exposure get more mileage from their filler.

For patients looking for longer-lasting results, we sometimes layer Sculptra or hyperdilute Radiesse under HA filler. Sculptra stimulates collagen over several months and lasts up to two years. Radiesse provides immediate structure and continues working as a biostimulator. Both require a different injection technique and a longer timeline to see results.

The tradeoff: HA filler is reversible with hyaluronidase if you don't like the result. Sculptra and Radiesse are not. We reserve those for patients with a clear understanding of the commitment.

Common Questions About Cheek Filler in Lubbock

Will cheek filler make me look puffy?

Not if it's placed correctly. Puffiness happens when filler is injected too superficially or too far forward. Proper placement along the cheekbone creates lift without bulk.

Can I get cheek filler if I've already had a facelift?

Yes. A facelift redrapes skin but doesn't replace lost volume. Many post-facelift patients benefit from conservative cheek filler to restore midface projection.

How much filler will I need?

It depends on the degree of volume loss. Most patients start with one syringe per side. Some need less. Some need more after the initial treatment has settled. We don't commit to a syringe count until we've seen how your tissue responds.

What's the difference between cheek filler and under-eye filler?

Cheek filler goes on the cheekbone and lifts the midface. Under-eye filler (tear trough filler) goes into the hollow between the lower lid and the cheek. Treating the cheek first often improves the under-eye area without direct injection.

Does cheek filler hurt?

Most patients describe it as pressure. Topical numbing cream reduces sensation, and most HA fillers contain lidocaine. Cannula technique causes less discomfort than needle technique.

Can I combine cheek filler with other treatments?

Yes, but timing matters. We often combine cheek filler with neuromodulators like Botox or Dysport on the same day. Laser treatments, microneedling, and chemical peels should be scheduled at least two weeks apart to avoid swelling overlap.

What if I don't like the result?

Hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, an enzyme that breaks down HA within hours. It's not common, but it's an option. This is one reason we prefer HA-based fillers for first-time patients—reversibility provides a safety net.
