Electrolysis is FDA-approved permanent hair removal that uses a fine probe inserted alongside each hair follicle. A brief electrical current destroys the follicle's ability to regrow hair. Each hair is treated individually. It's the only hair removal method classified as truly permanent by the FDA.

Laser treats large areas quickly but targets pigment in the hair—doesn't work on white, gray, or very light hair. Electrolysis works on any hair color and skin tone because it doesn't rely on pigment. Electrolysis is slower (one hair at a time) but truly permanent. Laser is faster with high reduction; electrolysis is the choice for permanent on any hair color.

Treatments are recommended every 2 to 4 weeks, or as often as hair growth occurs. Multiple sessions are required to achieve permanent results. Most areas require 12–18+ sessions over 1–2 years for full clearance—the longer timeline reflects treating each hair individually.

Each pulse is a brief pinch-and-warmth sensation. Some areas (upper lip, underarms) feel more than others. Topical numbing can be applied for sensitive patients. Most patients describe it as tolerable but not pleasant—the trade-off is permanent removal.

Recovery is about 1 day. Mild redness and tiny scabs at treated follicles for 24–48 hours. Use healing ointment, avoid picking. Skip sun exposure on treated areas for 5–7 days.

Yes—electrolysis can permanently remove hair triggered by hormonal conditions. However, ongoing hormonal triggers may produce new hair growth in other follicles over time. Patients with PCOS or active hormonal influences may need maintenance for new growth. Combining with hormonal management (under medical care) produces best long-term results.
