What to expect
You've just had your laser hair removal session. The hairs you treated will shed gradually over the next 1 to 2 weeks — that's not regrowth, it's the treated follicles releasing the hairs as they go dormant. This guide covers the next 24 to 48 hours and the rules that apply between sessions.
Why this matters
The laser targets pigment in active-phase hair follicles. Because we're working with pigment, sun exposure between sessions changes the dynamic — tanned or sun-darkened skin holds more pigment than the surrounding hair, which can affect both safety and effectiveness. Waxing, tweezing, or threading pulls hairs out of follicles entirely, which leaves the laser nothing to target during your next session. Shaving is fine and welcome.
Post care
- Wait at least 30 minutes before applying makeup, deodorant, or heavy products to the treated area; 24 hours is recommended.
- Apply SBS SHEER SPF 56 Sunscreen daily on exposed treated areas.
- Resume your normal skincare routine the following morning.
- For discomfort, apply a cool compress or aloe vera gel as needed.
Downtime
- Redness, mild swelling, and a "goosebump" appearance in the treated area are normal and typically resolve within 24 hours.
- Treated hairs will shed gradually over the next 1–2 weeks — this is part of the normal process, not regrowth.
Restrictions
- Avoid sweating, strenuous exercise, saunas, soaking in a bath, hot tub, or pool for 24 hours following treatment.
- Avoid all active skincare ingredients in the treated area — including AHAs, BHAs, retinols, and exfoliating products — for 48 hours.
- Avoid direct sun exposure for 2 weeks following treatment.
- Do not wax, tweeze, pluck, or thread between sessions.
- Shaving is permitted once skin is no longer sensitive.
- Wear loose, breathable clothing to minimize friction on treated areas.
When to call the spa
Contact The Spa if you notice:
- Signs of infection at follicle sites — increasing redness, warmth, pus, or drainage
- Severe or worsening swelling
- Pain that is intensifying rather than improving
- Blistering, burns, or changes in skin color (lightening or darkening)
Follow up
Treatments are recommended every 4 to 6 weeks to target hair in active growth phases. Multiple sessions are required to achieve permanent hair reduction.
Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy at a specific wavelength to target melanin (pigment) in the hair follicle. The light passes through the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the hair, generating heat that damages the follicle's ability to regrow hair. Multiple sessions are needed because hair grows in cycles and laser only kills hair in the active growth phase.
How does laser hair removal work?
A series of multiple sessions is required to achieve permanent hair reduction—most patients need a series of treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart to target hair in active growth phases. Facial hair often needs more sessions due to hormonal influence. After your initial series, occasional maintenance treatments keep results long-term. Hormonal changes (pregnancy, PCOS, menopause) can trigger new hair growth that needs touch-ups.
How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?
Most patients describe it as a rubber band snap. Our Cynosure diode laser has built-in cooling that significantly reduces discomfort compared to older devices. Sensitive areas (bikini, underarms, upper lip) feel more than other zones. Topical numbing is available if requested—most people don't need it.
Does laser hair removal hurt?
Yes—with the right laser. Our Cynosure diode laser is safe across the Fitzpatrick skin scale, including dark skin tones. Older lasers (alexandrite, IPL for hair) carried higher risk on darker skin. We use Nd:YAG capabilities for the deepest skin tones. We screen carefully and never use the wrong device for your skin type.
Is laser hair removal safe for dark skin?
Almost any area with unwanted hair: face (upper lip, chin, sideburns, neck), underarms, arms, legs, bikini line, Brazilian, back, chest, abdomen. We treat both men and women. The most common areas are face, underarms, bikini line, and legs for women; back, chest, and neck for men.
What areas can be treated with laser hair removal?
Permanent hair reduction is the goal—and the FDA-recognized claim. Most treated areas see 70–90% permanent reduction after a complete series. Some patients will see hormonal hair return (pregnancy, PCOS, menopause) that needs maintenance treatments. The bulk of treated hair is gone permanently.
How long do laser hair removal results last?
Yes—and you should. Shaving doesn't affect laser results because the hair shaft above the skin isn't what the laser targets. Don't wax, pluck, or use depilatory creams between sessions—those remove the hair from the root, which is exactly what the laser needs to target. Stick with shaving only.
Can I shave between laser sessions?
Shave the area 24 hours before treatment—the hair stubble guides the laser but skin needs to be smooth. Avoid sun exposure, tanning, and self-tanner for 4 weeks before. Skip retinoids on the area for 5 days before. Come with clean, product-free skin. We'll review aftercare at the appointment.
How do I prepare for a laser hair removal appointment?
No real downtime. Treated area may be slightly red and feel like a mild sunburn for a few hours—up to 24 hours for sensitive skin. Use aloe or a cooling moisturizer if needed. SPF for 7 days after on exposed areas. Hair will appear to grow for 1–2 weeks, then shed—this is normal.
What's the recovery from laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal ranges $75–$375 per session depending on the area treated. Series of 6 sessions: discounted pricing available. Members receive reduced per-session cost. Multiple sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart are required for permanent hair reduction; total count varies by area and individual response.
How much does laser hair removal cost in Lubbock?
If you're pregnant, recently tanned, taking Accutane (or have within 6 months), have active herpes outbreak in the treatment area, are on certain photosensitive medications, or have an active skin infection in the treatment area. We screen at consultation. Some hormonal medications can also affect treatment effectiveness.
When should I avoid laser hair removal?
Yes—we treat men regularly. Most common areas: beard line cleanup (not the full beard usually), neck, back, chest, shoulders. Some men opt for full beard removal—we'll discuss permanence before committing. Pricing is the same as for women.
Can men get laser hair removal?
Laser uses a single focused wavelength. IPL uses a broad spectrum of light. Laser is generally more effective per session, less painful with proper cooling, and safer across skin tones. We use a true laser (not IPL) for hair removal—the results are more reliable and the safety profile is better.
What's the difference between laser hair removal and IPL hair removal?
Treated hair in the active growth phase is permanently destroyed. New hair growth from hormonal triggers (pregnancy, menopause, hormonal medication, PCOS) is possible. Most patients see permanent reduction of the bulk of treated hair, with occasional maintenance for new growth.
