Microdermabrasion is a spa facial in the form of physical exfoliation (manual scrubbing) by use of a machine. No acids or enzymes are involved during treatment, but can be used before or after treatment to enhance results according to each clients skin. The machine combines exfoliating crystals, suction, and blowing air to create a sand blasting like effect on the surface of the skin. While crystals and blowing air abrade (scrub) the skin, suction promotes blood flow underneath the skin's surface. This is excellent for oxygenation of the dermis and epidermis which promotes healthy skin barrier function and a glowing complexion. Microdermabrasion is an excellent treatment for most skin types and conditions, but it is especially helpful with acne and acne scarring.
Forced skin cell turnover also known as exfoliation encourages the body to create new, healthy skin cells while purging out unhealthy bacteria. Pore depth and scarring are greatly reduced as microdermabrasion smoothes down the surface of the skin, making pits and pores more shallow, therefore less visible. Tenderness and redness can be expected after a microdermabrasion for 1-3 days, usually feeling and acting like a slight sunburn. Light flaking around day 3 may occur.
